Appointed Cabinet Secretary, Government of India, on 14th June 2004. In this capacity, he heads the civil service and coordinates all major assignments of senior government functionaries. While he works as Secretary to the Cabinet, he also overseas and coordinates major policy issues of government. He also heads the National Crisis Management Committee.

Mr. Chaturvedi's administrative experience is both rich and multi-faceted. He has been Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministries of Finance, Human Resource Development and Petroleum & Natural Gas for more than six years. The various senior assignments held by him under the Union Government also include Executive Director, Trade Development Authority of India & Chairman & Managing Director, State Trading Corporation of India. He has also been on the Board of several public sector undertakings including MMTC, Life Insurance Corporation of India & General Insurance Corporation of India. He is currently Member of India's Atomic Energy Commission and the Space Commission.

His educational background is deeply embedded in science: he holds a Masters Degree in Physics from Allahabad University with specialization in Electronics. He also studied Public Administration at Manchester University, U.K. and started his career as Associate Professor of Physics at the Engineering College, Allahabad University.

Mr. Chaturvedi has travelled widely and represented the Government at the UNICEF and UNDP Boards, New York. He has published several research papers including one on 'Maxwell's Distribution Law' - first published in the American Journal of Physics.
A proud recipient of a number of awards including a Special Award for Outstanding Performance by Government of Uttar Pradesh. Mr. Chaturvedi possesses an amiable disposition and is regarded as a role model by his friends, peers and colleagues.
